I was given the opportunity to take a look at this book by Mark Powers called 'Solo In Style"... which of course, is focused on drum solos. The book includes 6 etudes for beginner and intermediate performers.
Now what i really like about this book is how it is structured, it gives you song examples that are relevant to the style of each specific solo/etude. The first one in the book is based on 8th notes, and there is a very good description of how to read 8th notes and what the etude is based on at the beginning, and then a few exercises to get you ready for the actual etude. Each of the 6 etudes is explained like this and broken down really well in my opinion which is GREAT for beginners and even people just learning how to read drum music.
As you go through the book, the difficulty and complexity increases, but because of the way the etudes are explained and broken down into exercises it makes it easier for the reader to grasp. I also really like how the book goes through different styles of music from basic rock, funk, jazz, latin and even dips into different time signatures.
Overall i really love this book, its great for drummers of all skill levels and explores different music style and time signatures which makes it very versatile and great for ALL drummers. Easy to read and understand, great layout, and best of all VERY affordable!
i HIGHLY recommend this book to all drummers, and encourage you to check it out, and check out Mark Powers' website for his other books and lessons!
